Albert is an autonomous mobile robot built around a Max base from Zagros Robotics -- a local friend, Chris Hostetler, helped get it all working. Total construction time was about 4 months, and I probably spent a little over $1500.00 for parts and labor, not including the price of a refurbished laptop I bought for high level control.
The Pentium 200 laptop is connected to Albert's 68HC11 processor, and provides high level control, voice recognition, and excellent text-to-speech quality. Eventually, I plan to hook up a couple of RF modems for communications with my home PC... and even access the Internet! This set up would allow Albert to, say, wake us up in the morning and tell us the current value of our stock portfolio! (I'll simply have to parse the data coming in from a stock tracking website, and then send it to Albert's text-to-speech routines.)
Here is a complete list of Albert's features:
- a 68HC11 processor
- a Pentium 200 laptop
- 5 sonar sensors
- a digital compass
- 2 optical encoders
- 2 bump sensors
- an analog light sensor
- a 12V 12 Amp/Hour SLA battery
- a radio frequency modem (connects to my home PC)
- a Labtec microphone (for sound sensing and voice recognition)
- voice recognition
- high quality text-to-speech
